Michael King Bio

Artful Living is proud to represent the work of Michael King.

Michael King has created tile with an artisan’s hand and eye for nearly 30 years. Utilizing the unique and aesthetically beautiful Cuerda Seca technique, and rooted firmly in the Malibu style of the Arts & Crafts era, he custom-designs and creates his multi-colored tiles to perfectly fit his client’s needs.

Cuerda Seca, a technique dating back to 8th century Spain, actually means “dry line.” Michael has developed his own version of this style, utilizing a silk-screenable, wax oil emulsion with a mat black glaze suspended within it. This approach allows him to retain the high quality and deep, rich color and line work of the Malibu style, while working at a faster pace than previously possible.

Originally inspired by the Catalina tiles he came across in the mid 1970s, Michael was soon drawn to the warmer, earthier tones of Malibu and Craftsman styles. Well ahead of the trend, Michael began introducing his art tiles to an audience that would soon grow, as the Arts & Crafts movement of the 1920s and 30s inspired greater numbers of people.

With a Master’s degree in ceramic sculpture, Michael applies his knowledge and skill with a highly creative yet technical approach to achieve the exquisite quality of his art tiles. He develops his own rich, colorful, extremely durable glazes in addition to handcrafting all his tiles and designs.

A problem solver as well as an artist, Michael enjoys working closely with clients to understand their needs, both aesthetically and functionally. His approach and his craftsmanship have brought him a long and devoted clientele list including George Lucas, Sylvester Stallone, Rupert Murdock and Calvin Klein. In addition, Michael’s work has been shown at the Renwick Gallery and the Smithsonian Institute, among others.

Though many aspects of his work intrigue and inspire him, Michael feels the best part of his job is the end result—a completed project in the home of a satisfied client.
